It took over 200 years to build America, but it will take comedian Desiree Burch under two hours to dismantle it. One of Huffington Post’s “Favorite Female Comedians” and NY Magazine’s “Comedians Funny People Find Funny,” Desiree presents her newest solo show, Tar Baby, November 15-18 in the 2012 New Orleans Fringe Festival. Tar Baby is a retelling of America’s infamous black & white love affair, from shotgun wedding to “post-racial” open relationship.  In Tar Baby, which heads Off-Broadway this January, Desiree speaks to a growing majority of minority experiences in America with an insight that ranges from funny to dark and satiric to sincere, and a self-aware, socially conscious comedic sense reminiscent of Richard Pryor and Louis C.K.  Games, amusements and cultural atrocities meet in this one-woman carnival of Race & Capitalism—where no one’s a winner, but everyone’s still playing!

Desiree Burch (Performer/Writer) has performed five original solo performances at venues like PS 122, Joe’s Pub, Ars Nova, 59E59, Galapagos Art Space and at Fringe Festivals in NY, London, New Orleans, Hollywood, and Edinburgh. Her comedy has been seen on VH1, MTV, NBC, Comedy Central, and Channel 4.  Critics call her “a force of nature” (Scotsman) onstage, “hilarious” (NY Daily News), “vibrant” (Gothamist) and “surprisingly meaty” (Off-Off Online). She is a member of the Drama Desk-nominated, NY Innovative Theater Award-winning ensemble, The New York Neo-Futurists and a graduate of Yale University.

Dan Kitrosser (Co-Writer/Editor) is a writer, performer and storyteller.  His plays have been performed at P.S. 122, The Ohio Theatre, Bleecker Street Theatre, and Urban Stages, with work developed at Primary Stages, The Lark Play Development Center and Rabbit Hole Ensemble, and grants awarded by Brooklyn Arts Council in 2010 and 2011.  He is an MFA Playwright at The New School in New York City.
Isaac Byrne (Director) has directed the NY Innovative Theater Award-winning To Nineveh, Green, Something True, and I Used To Write On Walls (all by Bekah Brunstetter), Fresh Kills (59E59), The New Normal and the cowboy is dying (Coyote Rep), True West (Curious Frog Company) and Desiree Burch’s 52 Man Pickup. He is the former Artistic Director of the GLAAD-Award winning company Working Man’s Clothes, and the current Artistic Director of Theatre 4the People.

Tar Baby will run 11/15 at 9pm, 11/16 at 9pm, 11/17 at 7pm, 11/18 at 5pm as part of the 5^th Annual New Orleans Fringe Festival at Backyard Ballroom (3519 St. Claude Ave). The New Orleans Fringe Festival, Nov. 14-18, 2012 will be a five-day mind-blowing spectacle of theater of all types from New Orleans and all over the country performing at venues throughout the city, primary in the Marigny and Bywater. The New York Neo-Futurists’ award-winning “Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind” is in its 8th year of an open-ended, 50-week-a-year run.  We have written over 2,500 plays for “Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind” and created and produced 7 full-length live productions – including Locker #4173b, which received the New York Innovative Theatre Award for “Outstanding Performance Art” and “The Complete and Condensed Stage Directions of Eugene O’Neill”, which received rave reviews in the New York Post, New York Magazine, the New Yorker and was Charles Isherwood’s Critic’s Pick in the New York Times this September.

The new Visual Art Performance Biennial returns to NYC with a fantastic new piece conceived and directed by Los Angeles-based artist Wu Tsang with Travis Chamberlain of the New Museum: Full Body Quotation.

The piece is a deconstruction of interviews from the seminal Queer/Trans documentary “Paris is Burning”. Major figures from the documentary on New York City’s Ballroom Circuit, including documentarian Jennie Livingston herself are celebrated, scrutinized, paired with and pitted against each other to call into question the authenticity of narrative, self-presentation, and intention.

Oh yeah, I’m in it. And I’m FABULOUS!

I’d like to be the first to welcome me back to the USA and summer-like weather from my trip around the UK and Europe. It was a fantastic 5 weeks, with well-reviewed and attended shows at the Edinburgh Fringe, and perhaps one of my favorite ever performances of 52 Man Pickup in Amsterdam.
